3D Sculpture

As part of the Summer 2024 Project I was assigned with the task of creating an abstract sculpture which represents the response to a material commonly used in design. I decided on metal as my material so that I could develop my understanding of this design element.

During the analysis of the physical properties of metal I began to appreciate how disparate the metal families were and questioned how could one object represent some of these conflicting characteristics.

When investigating my own emotional response to metal, I recalled my first encounter which was playing with a bead run at the dentist. Reflecting on further personal experiences I concluded I have found metal to provide me with freedom and entertainment.

When viewing my sculpture I hope that observers connect with some elements of its design, perhaps the bead run or rollercoaster elements. Physical properties of metals such as its strength, ductility, malleability and conductivity have been incorporated into the form using automotive parts, fencing wire and a light bulb.

The overall appearance includes a range of textures and finishes of metal, to represent the contrasting characteristics of metal.
